"Lost City of Lanier" Cemetary

Located only eight miles north of Oglethorpe, is a once bustling community that has been lost due to progress.  In 1837, the city of Lanier became the first county seat.  It was conveniently located on the main stage line between Tazwell and Columbus. Then, in 1930, the town's large frame hotel met with it's fate and burned to the ground early on a Wednesday morning due to a fire that was believed to have started in the kitchen flue. This was deeply regretted as it was frequently visited by an array of people who came to Lanier to visit the seven different mineral springs known better as Miona Springs.  As time went on though, gradual progress started taking place and popularity began to fade from this area.  The Central of Georgia Railroad extended its railroad tracks to Oglethorpe and with it went the people, leaving not so much as a stick or stone to mark the business center of Lanier.

Although few reminders remain today of this once flourishing community, a couple of pieces of history still exist.  A good example is the old post office, which is still standing. Another is the Lanier Cemetary, which is located, however, on private property, which brings me to my creepy tale.

Late in the evening, one March afternoon, couple of friends and I  met at the home of Ms. Cindy Law, another good friend, and the person lucky enough to live on the land in the Lanier Cemetary is located.  We had been talking alot over the past year about wanting to visit this spot, so it was very exciting to have the chance to finally get to actually go there.  When we got there, it was deep in the woods and well hidden.  The cemetary is so old that some of the graves are hard to find because of trees and brush that have grown there since the early days when the cemetary was started.  We walked along as Cindy told us some history regarding the cemetary and the old city.  Then, came the part most exciting.  As we approached one of the very first graves, my EMF meter alarmed loudly, telling us that there was a good chance we weren't alone on this tour.  This was a very chilling occurrence, as it was not completely dark yet which is usually the best time for spiritual activity.  After this, we journeyed on deeper into the woods and found several more graves and even a set of graves with an old iron fence around it. Needless to say, it was a very interesting tour which turned out to be a very successful ghost hunt.  A very special thanks to Cindy for allowing me to put this story on my site, and also for taking her time to give us a tour of this as well as the rest of Lanier and Miona Springs.  It was an experience that none of us will soon forget.

As of now, I do not have any pictures or EVP, but I hope to visit this place again in the near future and hope to be lucky enough to capture something, so keep checking back.
